A Case Study: Dura-Deck

Dura-Deck,
Inc., a family-owned pool deck construction business in
Tampa, FL, needed a low-cost, accurate and easy-to-install
timekeeping system to manage its 25 employees. It was using
time cards to track employees’ time and attendance, but
faced the problem of buddy punching, when an employee
punches another employee’s time card. It turned to Lathem
Time and its TouchStation biometric system, which uses
fingerprint technology to accurately record employee time
and eliminates buddy punching.
Problem:
Payroll was very tedious for Dura-Deck, Inc. The company
used manual time cards to track employees’ time, but it
wasn’t monitored, said Kimberly Wilson, executive director.
“Since no one was available to monitor the time clock, there
were some employees who would arrive to work up to 45
minutes after their hand-written time card stated. The only
answer was to man the time clock to ‘catch’ who was here at
what time and who was clocking in for others. This would
stir up some hard feelings in our family-run business. We
were looking for an electronic answer.”
Solution:
Dura-Deck learned about Lathem Time when Kimberly’s husband,
Jeff, Dura-Deck’s project manager, went to pick up a part
for his boat. The boat shop was using Lathem’s PayClock EZ
for timekeeping and Jeff was impressed with the automation
and the way the software integrated with QuickBooks. Dura-Deck
signed on to become a beta tester for Lathem and now is so
pleased with the product “it is the ONLY system for us now
and forever,” Wilson said. “TouchStation™ is the best answer
for us. If it were a card-based system, an employee could
still clock in for someone else if he had his card. I would
recommend (and already have!) this system to anyone with
employees.”
TouchStation™ attaches to a computer and comes with Lathem’s
PayClock EZ software that automatically calculates worked
hours including overtime, tracks sick and vacation time, and
provides 22 standard time and labor reports. The system will
export hours directly to most major payroll providers
including ADP and PayChex. It also offers seamless
integration with the latest QuickBooks accounting products
for a complete “touch-to-paycheck” solution. An optional
remote finger sensor, allows employees to clock in and out
at their own computers across a local area network.
Wilson said she liked the TouchStation system because she
could configure it to fit her office’s needs. “The whole
system is a perfect combination of checks and balances,”
Wilson said. “The TouchStation hardware combined with the
PayClock EZ software eliminates several steps (especially
manual entry of time cards) in the already complicated
payroll process.”
